8 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Flooring Contractor

Choosing your flooring is only the first step of your remodeling project. Now you must get it installed, and that involves hiring a professional flooring contractor. Just as you spent a lot of time asking questions and investigating all of your flooring options, we also recommend that you take the time to evaluate your flooring professional. This way, everyone is on the same page and you know what to expect.

What’s your schedule? You need more than a start and end date. Make sure you know which days your flooring contractor will be working in your home, and the approximate hours. This allows you to plan your life around your remodeling project.

How will we communicate? As with any relationship, a lack of communication can cause problems. Make sure your contractor knows how to reach you during the day, and vice versa.

Who will be here? You have every right to know who will be in your home, who will be supervising the project, and who is in charge of locking up at the end of the day (assuming you aren’t home at that time).

How can we work together to protect my property? Your contractor can share tips with you, such as moving items out of the room, using dust covers, or taking pictures off of the wall (hammering can shake them loose). If you have pets, your contractor needs to know about their presence, and they should be contained in an area away from the construction zone.

Do you have any concerns about this project? There are always some unknowns, with any remodeling project. Your flooring contractor can share their concerns with you, so that you can anticipate the potential for any problems or delays.

What happens if there’s a change order? Ask your flooring contractor how they document changes in work, prices, or schedule. This way you will have clear communication regarding any changes, and your final balance won’t come as a surprise.

Do you need to know where the utility shutoffs are located? If you’re not at home while the work is performed, searching for gas, water, or electric shutoffs can cause delays.

What kind of guarantees do you offer on the work? You deserve to know what kind of guarantees are offered, in the event that something goes wrong.

We can answer all of these questions, and more, so that you feel confident and secure in your new flooring project. Just give us a call, and we’ll be happy to work out the details with you.
